U.S. Route 66 was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System. Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926. The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in America, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles.
Route 66 was a popular stretch for those migrating to booming California. The neon lights of motels and gas stations were almost as popular as the highway itself. Many of those historic landmarks are still there today! If you’re looking for a great road trip this summer, consider a cruise along Route 66.
